Corona Virus Day 29: In it for the long run

It’s been more than I week since I wrote my last post. For that, I have several reasons.

First of all, I’m currently on Easter holiday and enjoying my days off work. The weather have shown itself from its best side with copious amounts of sun and warm weather. We hit 21 degrees the other day – it’s almost like its summer.
That means I’ve been out and enjoying the weather. Been on some nice long bicycle rides, had some decent long road trips and also seen some friends and my parents (and yes, we’ve kept good distance between ourselves).

Secondly, I’ve kind of laid off all the Corona news lately. Don’t know if I can say it’s a conscious choice, seems more like the other way around. I’ve essentially pushed it to the back of my head and on the back burner.
In the beginning, all the news were exciting. A new virus. Who is getting infected? How contagious is it? How many people are going to die? What are the ramifications?
All of that and more have been answered. Now the news are basically just more of the same. And to be honest, it’s kind of depressing to listen to such news repeatedly.
The only good news we’ve gotten lately, is how it looks like we’ve broken the curve here in Denmark and also in other places. We’re getting things under control and are planning to reopen our society again and get things back on track.

Regarding getting things back on track. Our prime minister went on air last Monday and told us the lock-down is getting extended to May 10th, though with some changes. Schools are opening for the youngest classes, as that will free up some capacity from the parents and they can return to work faster. A lot of families have struggled with upholding work and taking care of their small children at the same time. I can just see how big an impact it have at my own work, where several colleagues are working in the evening when their kids are sleeping. They simply can’t make it work otherwise, as their kids require too much attention normally.

All big gatherings are also prohibited throughout the summer, which means no festivals or other big parties / events. A big bummer for a lot of people, but it makes perfect sense. Gathering several thousand people in a limited space where hygiene isn’t exactly the highest priority and the willingness to share body fluids is high = a fucking disaster waiting to happen.

So, yeah.

While things are starting to look better, there’s still a long way ahead of us before we’re back to normal. And from the looks of it, we have to get past the other side of the summer before things are somewhat back to normal if everything goes to plan.

This is part of a series of posts I’ve written about the Corona virus and how it have impacted our society. Equal parts news, observations and thoughts. See the rest of the posts here.
