Corona Virus Day 15: The numbers Mason, what do they mean?

USA now have over 75K confirmed cases of Corona virus and is putting up temporary morgues outside the hospitals in New York. They have also reported over 200 deaths for a single day. A first since the Corona virus hit the country. 3.2 million have registered as jobless this week. Things are starting to look really grim across the pond. Especially since a lot of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and don’t have proper health insurance. I would probably be shitting my pants if I lived over there.

Italy is still being hit hard, but have reported a falling number of confirmed cases for the last four consecutive days. Here’s to hoping they have broken the curve and it is getting better. Though it is still too early to say and they might still be hit by a second wave.

Back home, our government is discussing a new proposal, that would limit gatherings in public spaces to no more than two persons. That’s quite a harsh step up from our current limit (10 persons). They are also proposing the police can close of public spaces such as parks and playgrounds. As the weather is getting better, more and more people are wanting to go out. To limit exposure and minimize spread, they want to avoid people gathering in public spaces. The rationale is good enough, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem here in Aalborg. Maybe in Copenhagen or Aarhus, where there’s more people.

It seems to me they’re tightening the screws ever so slightly. It is probably just a matter of time before there’s a complete curfew. Our freedoms are ever so slowly being taken away and it’s surprising how well people are taking it. No protests or arguments against it. Luckily they have put sunset dates on the various laws, though most of them are a year out. That’s a long time, but we will also probably be fighting this for a long time. This isn’t something that is over in two weeks. Our society is going to shut down in various states for a long, long, long time.

This is part of a series of posts I’ve written about the Corona virus and how it have impacted our society. Equal parts news, observations and thoughts. See the rest of the posts here.
