The best books I read in 2019

I’ve always been an avid reader for as long as I can remember.

My tastes usually revolve around fantasy and sci-fi, with divergences to horror and true-crime. Comics is also something I have always read, though it wasn’t until my twenties I started getting into the more “serious” comics instead of Donald Duck, Asterix and Beetle Bailey that I grew up with.

According to good ol’ trusty Goodreads.com, I’ve clocked just over 10K pages last year, continuing my trend of reading at least 10K pages every year.

Here is my list (in no particular order) of the best books / comics I read in 2019:

Hitman series by Garth Ennis

My favorite Hitman (and no, I’m not talking about Agent 47). Tommy Monaghan is a fantastic character, with witty jokes and a no-holds barred approach. Fun and hilarious comics, well worth a read. Oh, and did I mention it takes place in the DC Universe? Yup, he also gets to meet Batman, Superman and lots of other super heroes.

The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett

A really interesting take on fantasy, where humans hide behind wards at night, as demons roam the land. Life is short and brutal and the author doesn’t shy away from depicting the darker sides of life.
I’m currently reading the last book of the series and so far they have all been good, though the books tend to drag on a bit, as he spends a lot of time telling backstories for the various characters, instead of moving the story forward.

Line War by Neal Asher

The final book about Agent Cormac (sadly). Loved the series. If you want military sci-fi with lots of action and a trigger / murder-happy drone or two where you don’t have to think a lot, this is the series for you.
Not groundbreaking in any means, but he has some good ideas and fresh takes that doesn’t feel too worn out.

Salvation by Peter F. Hamilton

If you like space opera, look no further than Peter F. Hamilton. The undisputed king of the genre. This book is no different and leaves you on a cliff hanger. The second book came out last year and is on my to-read list (when I get through all the other books I have laying on my bookshelf, which feels like a Sisyphus task sometimes).
