The other day I took my first steps in Unity. I have toyed around with the idea of creating something in a game engine. Previously I have tried Unreal Engine and CryEngine, but it didn’t amount to much, other than creating a flat map with some terrain in it and then just forgetting everything about it for a year or so.
All that changed a week or two ago. I was browsing Reddit (as usual), when I stumbled upon a guy who had created some maps for his D&D campaign in Blender. It looked amazing to say the least. I was hooked, line and sinker as I have been thinking a long time about making some maps for my own D&D campaign. I searched around for some Blender tutorials and somehow I found my way into Unity’s asset store. I was floored by the amounts of prefabricated 3d models you can get to build your own levels with.
So I downloaded Unity and jumped right into some tutorials. First I created a simple ball-rolling game and next up was a top-down zombie survival shooter. Pretty fun, however the learning curve is pretty steep. So much stuff to keep track of (not to mention all the things / areas I haven’t touched yet). Now I’m at that point where I’m dicking around trying to create some terrain and a little town with some prefabs I found. It’s going okay. Not good, not totally terrible, just okay. Apparently my PC chokes completely on calculating lightning when I’m placing a lot of prefabs (protip: turn off lightning when you are doing that). So yeah, hopefully I’ll sometime end up with a nice little town, which I can make into a map or maybe even a video to show my players.
