2016 – A retrospective

I haven’t really been active lately. My last post was back in September when I landed my new job and I’ve been pretty busy with it pretty much since then. 2016 have been a year with victories and defeats, ups and downs, highs and lows.

If I have to sum it up, I have in 2016:

  • Finished my education.
  • Gotten certified as a PRINCE2 Practitioner.
  • Set a handful of new personal records in the gym
  • Landed a new job
  • Lost a family member

2016 have been a weird year for me. It marked the end of 3 years of school and the beginning of a new era when I got my new job. I’m very happy with my job and grateful for being given the chance. What I don’t miss however, is the circus regarding unemployment benefits which I hopefully will not go back to for a long, long time.

I haven’t really been as active in the gym as I wanted and I have dropped handball for good (probably, you never know). My usual trips on my mountainbike have also been on a record low. All in all, I want some more consistency in my workouts. My goal is to go to the gym 3 times a week and then a trip on my bicycle once or twice weekly when the weather gets warmer.

Other than getting some more consistency into my workouts, I also want to sharpen my skills, both technical and artistic. I have always wished that I was better at drawing, but the problem is that I simply just don’t do it enough. There is a saying that goes “if you want to be a good writer, you have to write a lot”. I guess the same counts for drawing. It’s just too easy to sit down and play some games on the computer or read a book, than actually putting work and effort into something you suck at.

Regarding my other hobbies, I would also like to play some more pen and paper rpg’s and board-games. Something I find a lot of fun, but my biggest problem is finding a group of people willing to meet up regularly. Maybe I will join a group in TRoA, but I don’t know yet.

I can also feel that I’m ready to move on to something else housing wise. Living two persons in a 2-room apartment can only go on for so long. I want more room and something to call my own. I have lived in my current apartment since I moved out from my parents place over 7 years ago.
I have been looking at buying a house, but haven’t really gotten that far as I don’t know how much the bank will lend me. I will probably find something in Aalborg, as it doesn’t make sense to move out from Aalborg, when both my girlfriend and I works in the middle of Aalborg. A car would be nice, but I don’t really have the daily need for it as such. Also, getting a car is just a big money-sink.

Having a proper job, also enables a lot of other things. I want to travel more, something that was quite hard to do as a student. Ranjani have also expressed she wants to see the world some more and maybe we’ll go somewhere for a couple of weeks or a month.

On a closing note of my ramblings, I want to end on this.

I feel that 2017 can be a big year.  On the personal level there is a lot of room for growth, both as a person but also career-wise. I’ll just have to make some plans and see where it goes. Hopefully it will be somewhere fun, interesting and rewarding.
