Corona Virus Day 9: California Dreamin’

Today Italy rounded 4000 deaths, which is 627 more than yesterday. That number is unfortunately only going to rise. We better hope it slows down, otherwise it’s looking pretty damn grim. There have died more in Italy to the Corona virus now, than in China. That puts it quite into perspective.

Today we also received news, that the worlds 5th largest economy, California, is ordering people to stay home. USA is going to be hit hard and it’s going to be “interesting” to see just how hard. Based on how it have been handled so far over there, I worry that is too little too late.
I can’t even imagine how it is for a lot of Americans right now. Many of them are living paycheck to paycheck. A lot of people are getting laid off and it’s only going to get worse (I feel like I have been writing this a lot the last few days).
While I love USA as a country, I’m not blind to its flaws. Its democracy is flawed and its health care system is terrible. Which is kind of ironic. They got some of the best doctors and hospitals in the world. If you got the money. If you don’t, you’re screwed. No doubt about it.

Many Americans simply can’t afford to stay at home for the next few weeks, let alone months. They are going to lose their jobs (many already have) and have to rely on the mercy of their landlord and hope he’s extending credit. Sadly, a lot of young Americans aren’t taking it serious. They’re on spring break and want to party. They’re young and invincible and think they they won’t get sick. But what they don’t think about, is that they help spreading the Corona virus. When they go home, they’re taking the virus with them. And when that happens, then shit really hits the fan.

This is part of a series of posts I’ve written about the Corona virus and how it have impacted our society. Equal parts news, observations and thoughts. See the rest of the posts here.
